The landscape opens up a little for a while until you cross under the railway line but just stick to the side of the river and you're in the right place. It's deserved time away from the busy pressures of modern life and provides a beautiful reconnect with nature. My guard went down a little (but only a little) and I was able to properly look at my surroundings. Its a winding road and the cars look quite vicious powering along it. The Railway Land is one of my favourite places in Lewes - it offers so much for a relatively small space and is full of wildlife and history. There was an opening into the next field. The South Downs Way winds its way through the village towards the nearby River Ouse and the railway station. The area is a designated National Nature Reserve and is the site of an Iron Age fort. If you would like a circular hike, you could try a hilly 13 mile one from Hassocks to Devils Dyke. Views are nice over the countryside. One of the pleasures of the walk is that the entire route is in view for much of the walk, so you can look back at the terrain you have already done or ahead to the delights to come.
